Challenge

Background

One of the biggest challenges lawyers face is summarising how legal developments impact them and their clients. These developments could be regulations, new legislation or court judgments. Often the information is contained in long documents of multiple pages which require the reader to skim search for the relevant information such as dates when something comes into force, impact on different stakeholders and key points of interest.

At present, law firms scan for this information either by searching websites or by receiving alerts before reading the whole update and writing summaries before sharing with colleagues or clients.

Challenge

We would like teams to design a solution using AI that scans the following websites for new updates: FCA Publications, Bank of England Publications, Supreme Court Cases, and then creates efficient summaries of those updates.

You need to create a template for all updates so that they have the following information:

  1. A title
  2. A summary statement in no more than two sentences
  3. A full summary explaining the key points of the new development (could include bullets and should be no more than 200 words)
  4. A section with key dates (such as the end of a consultation period, date of judgment or deadline)
  5. A section with expected impact (which could be a red, amber or green flag).

Example Solutions

There are some solutions available in the market that provide summaries of regulatory changes – some are provided by law firms; others are focused on providing summaries for regulatory compliance. All these tools have found ways to scrape information from websites and then capture key points needed for a summary.
